Senior Portrait Sessions at Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester, MA Kristen Zannella Photography

If you’ve been dreaming of senior photos with your feet in the sand, the ocean stretching out behind you, and that golden light that makes everything look like a dream — Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, Massachusetts is the place.

And if you want a photographer who actually knows that beach the way a local does? That’s where I come in.

I’m Kristen Zannella, and Wingaersheek is my home beach for senior sessions. I’ve photographed seniors here more times than I can count — in every season, at every tide, at sunrise and at golden hour. I know exactly where the light falls in July versus September. I know which rocks make the most dramatic backdrop, which spots in the dunes feel intimate and dreamy, and where you’ll find the perfect stretch of sand when the tide goes out and the whole beach just opens up.

This is not a location I drive to once a year. It’s where I do my best work.

Vienna, Nicollette and Izzy’s are just a few of the seniors from Class of 2026.

Why Wingaersheek Is One of the Best Senior Portrait Locations in Massachusetts

Wingaersheek Beach in West Gloucester is genuinely unlike any other beach on the North Shore. Most beaches give you sand and water. Wingaersheek gives you a whole world to work with.

At low tide, the sandbars extend what feels like forever — shallow, crystal-clear water, tide pools, and an expanse of beach that practically disappears at high tide. There are massive boulders you can climb, beach grass swaying in the breeze, a lighthouse in the distance, and dunes that catch the late afternoon light in the most beautiful way.

Every session here has variety built right in. In a single hour, we can go from golden dune portraits to tidal pool reflections to dramatic rocky shoreline shots — without ever walking more than a few minutes. That variety is what makes your gallery feel like it was shot in five different places, not one.

What I Know About Shooting Here That Others Don’t

Because I shoot at Wingaersheek regularly, I’ve learned things you only learn from experience:

Tides change everything. Low tide is when this beach is at its most magical. The sandbars reveal themselves, the water clears, and you get that endless, open feeling that makes these photos so stunning. I always check the tide chart when planning your session — because the difference between low tide and high tide at Wingaersheek is the difference between a breathtaking session and a crowded strip of sand.

The light at golden hour here is extraordinary. The beach faces west, which means late afternoon light wraps around you in a way that’s almost impossibly flattering. I typically schedule sessions to start about an hour before sunset. The warmth that comes off that sky in the last hour of light — reflecting off the water, off the sand, off your face — is something you can’t replicate anywhere else.

June and September are the sweet spots. Midsummer is beautiful but the beach is packed on weekends and the greenhead flies show up in July and August. June offers lush light, empty(ish) beaches, and perfect temperatures. Early September is even better — the crowds thin out, the light turns golden and warm, and you still have long evenings for sunset sessions.

What Your Session at Wingaersheek Will Look Like

We’ll meet at the beach about an hour before sunset — or earlier if you have your heart set on a specific spot. From the moment we arrive, we’re moving through the beach together: starting in the dunes, working down through the rocks and beach grass, eventually making our way to the water’s edge and the sandbars when the tide is right.

I guide you the whole time. There’s no standing stiffly in front of a camera. We walk, we laugh, we find the spots where the light is doing something amazing. You’ll be so caught up in the experience that you forget you’re being photographed — and that’s exactly when the best photos happen.

Most seniors bring 2–3 outfits. I recommend starting with something that moves well in the wind (flowy dresses or wide-leg pants photograph beautifully here), and having a more relaxed casual look for a different vibe. Soft neutrals, warm tones, and earth colors photograph stunningly against the sand and water. And yes — you will likely get your feet wet. Lean into it. Those are always some of the most joyful photos of the whole session.

Who Books Wingaersheek Beach Sessions with KZP

My seniors come from all over the North Shore — Lynnfield, Wakefield, Reading, North Reading, Andover, Wilmington, Burlington, Peabody, Danvers, and beyond. Many are students from Austin Prep, Pingree School, St. Mary’s High School, Lynnfield High School, Wakefield Memorial, Reading Memorial, and North Reading High School.

Some have been to Wingaersheek their whole lives and always knew they wanted their senior portraits there. Others have seen the beach on social media and immediately added it to their vision board. Either way, the moment they arrive and see that light and that view, they get it.

Good Harbor Beach: The Other Gloucester Senior Portrait Location I Love

While Wingaersheek is my most-requested beach, Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester is another favorite for senior sessions — and it has a completely different feel.

Good Harbor is wider and more open, with a classic New England beach energy. The light there in early evening is gorgeous, and it tends to be a little less wild and windswept than Wingaersheek — which some seniors prefer, especially if they want a cleaner, more classic beach backdrop. I love recommending one versus the other based on a senior’s personality and the vibe they’re going for. Lizzy, Rori & Lizzy are just a few of the seniors from the Class of 2026 that were held at Good Harbor (another gem in Gloucester!).
