When Should I Book My Senior Photographer? (Earlier Than You Think)

by Kristen Zannella Photography

Here’s something I hear from families every single year, usually sometime in August or September: “I know it’s probably late, but do you have any openings?”

Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don’t. And it’s always a little heartbreaking when I have to turn away a senior whose photos I would have loved to take — just because the calendar filled up before they reached out.

So if you’re wondering when to book your senior photographer on the North Shore, here’s the honest answer: sooner than feels necessary.

When does senior season actually happen?

Most North Shore seniors — from Lynnfield, Wakefield, Reading, North Reading, and surrounding towns — schedule their sessions between June and October. Here’s why that window is so popular:

Summer (June–August) means no school schedule to work around, longer golden hours, and the relaxed energy that comes with having actual free time. It’s also when seniors have the most flexibility for hair, nails, and outfit prep.

Early fall (September–October) is arguably the most beautiful time to shoot outdoors in Massachusetts. The light turns warm and golden, the foliage starts shifting, and seniors have their senior-year energy in full swing. This is my personal favorite time of year to shoot.

Both windows fill up fast. Really fast.

When do photographers’ calendars fill up?

Honestly? By spring.

The seniors who get their first-choice dates — the golden-hour Saturday in late September, the soft summer evening in July — are the ones who reach out in January through April of their senior year.

By May and June, I’m often booking into limited weekend slots. By July, prime fall dates are largely spoken for. By August, I’m working with whatever’s left.

I’m not saying this to create urgency — I’m saying it because I genuinely want every senior who wants to work with me to be able to. And the way to make that happen is to plan ahead.

Does it matter what time of year I shoot?

It can — depending on what you’re envisioning.

If you want lush green fields, wildflowers, and that bright summer energy, late June through July is your window.

If you want warm golden light, changing leaves, and that cozy fall feeling, late September through mid-October is magical.

If you’re more flexible and just want beautiful photos, you have more options — and I can help you figure out what will look best for your personality and style.

One thing to keep in mind: Massachusetts weather is famously unpredictable, and I always build flexibility into my booking process for weather holds and reschedules. When you book early, you have more room to move if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

What about the school photo deadline?

Many families want their senior portraits done before school photos or cap-and-gown deadlines in the fall. Some studios and schools have specific submission windows. If you have a hard deadline — for a yearbook, a school directory, or a family milestone — make sure to mention that when you reach out, so we can build your session timeline around it.

Seniors from Austin Prep, Pingree School, St. Mary’s, Reading Memorial, Lynnfield High, Wakefield Memorial, and North Reading High — I’m familiar with the general timelines at your schools and always happy to talk through timing.

What happens when you book early?

Booking your session ahead of time means:

  • You get your first-choice date and time (yes, golden-hour Saturday is possible)
  • You have plenty of time to prepare outfits, do a little research on locations, and feel genuinely excited instead of rushed
  • If the weather doesn’t cooperate, there are easy options for rescheduling
  • You’re not scrambling — and neither is your photographer

There’s also something kind of wonderful about having it on the calendar early. It’s something to look forward to in the middle of all the other senior-year chaos.

So when should you book?

Here’s my simple guide:

Junior spring (January–May): Ideal. You’ll have the most choices, the most flexibility, and the most time to plan.

Summer before senior year (June–August): Still great — reach out as soon as possible to check availability.

Early fall of senior year (September–October): Possible, but popular dates fill fast. Contact me immediately and we’ll figure out what’s available.

Late fall/winter sessions: These can be beautiful in their own right — just a different vibe. If you’ve missed the golden-season window, don’t give up. Let’s talk.
